Introductory Short Course (ISC) in Health Professions Education (HPE)
January 17 - 21, 2011

Course credit: 1

Pre requisite: Health Professions Educator

Duration: 50 hours (two weeks) of study consisting of one-week part-time pre-reading, and one-week full-time intensive face-to-face component.

Aims: The course aims to introduce the participants to educational philosophies underpinning Health Professions Education globally. It also introduces participants to innovative teaching learning strategies and pitfalls in assessment.

Objectives:

By the end of the course the participants should be able to:

I. Curriculum

  • differentiate between the different components of a curriculum and its evolution
  • relate program evaluation to curriculum development
  • differentiate between outcomes and objectives, and the different levels of objectives
  • develop a one-week module and identify the overall objectives, core content, sequence, appropriate teaching, learning and assessment strategies.

II. Teaching and Learning

  • identify characteristics of adult learners and factors that enhance or inhibit learning
  • match different modes of instruction with their strengths and weaknesses
  • demonstrate common learner-centered approaches to teaching and importance of feedback
  • identify different learning resources: e-learning, web-based learning management system s, repositories of learning objects, skills learning centers and standardized patients

III. Small Group Learning with focus on Problem Based Learning (PBL)

  • discuss the strengths and limitations of small group learning
  • classify small group learning  with PBL as a specialized version
  • identify basic principles underlying PBL
  • demonstrate the tutor's and student's roles
  • conduct the process of a small group (PBL) tutorial
  • apply process of assessment and feedback strategies in  the (PBL) tutorial

IV. Assessment

  • develop assessment plans using the principles of assessment
  • identify current trends in assessment
  • construct & critique a multiple choice question(s)

Local participants: Rs. 10,000 per person
International participants: US$ 500 per person
