Welcome to Aga Khan University School of Nursing. 

AKU School of Nursing, established in 1980, has the honour of being the founding academic entity of the University and a benchmark for nursing education in Pakistan. The school is committed to excellence in the field of education, research, nursing practice, and administration. It is also committed to providing the highest standards in nursing education programmes, in line with the University's vision and values.

In Pakistan, AKU-SON has pioneered a transition in the nursing education programmes, by upgrading nursing education from a diploma to a graduate programme. The school is now looking forward to having a doctoral degree programme in the upcoming years. Additionally, AKU-SON has been collaborating at the national, regional, and international levels to strengthen the nursing profession. Some key achievements in this area include collaboration with the McMaster University, the creation of the Sigma Theta Tau Rho Delta Chapter, and working with the Pakistan Nursing Council to enhance nursing teaching/learning standards in Pakistan.

Over the past years, the reach of the School has expanded to include East Africa ( Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania), Syria, Egypt, and Afghanistan. In East Africa, AKU-SON has established permanent programmes and issues its own degrees. In Nairobi, a new College of Nursing and Midwifery has been established as part of a new AKU Faculty of Health Sciences for East Africa. In Afghanistan, Syria, and Egypt AKU-SON is collaborating in government nursing initiatives, with the primary objective of capacity building to improve the quality and relevance of nursing higher education in these countries. AKU-SON greatly owes its success in these endeavours to its alumni and faculty, who are playing a magnificent role in supporting AKU's national and international work.

In addition to teaching, the faculty is also involved in research, in order to meet the emerging needs of the country and the regions. The major working research themes for the school are women issues, maternal and neonatal child health, and nursing education. All these initiatives support School's strong agenda of capacity building and faculty development. As a result, today, AKU-SON has been able to prepare faculty that can teach at the BScN and MScN levels. 

Today, the school caters to a diverse population of students, coming from all over Pakistan and from East Africa, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Syria and Egypt. The faculty always strives to provide an open academic environment to the students in order to promote intellectual inquiry, for personal and professional development.

We expect to have more opportunities for national and international cooperation and collaboration, and hope for greater achievements in the future. We also hope for a greater participation from our faculty and alumni in all our future endeavours.
