Statistics, Data Management and Analysis and Computer Skills Course

Introduction
This course is developed and directed by the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Community Health Sciences.

The course has been offered regularly since 1999 for researchers in health care and social sciences. To date 19 courses have been offered for 381 local and international participants. Off campus specially design ed version of this course has also been offered on request.

Goal
The course is designed to provide basic knowledge of computer skills, sound understanding of fundamental statistical concepts - using hands-on approach, and essential data management techniques.

Course Outline

I. Statistics:

  • Descriptive: Organising, summarising and displaying data
  • Inferential: Estimation and hypothesis testing; Sample size calculation for estimating and testing a population mean
  • Hands-on practice of the concepts learned in statistics using SPSS

II. Data Management & Analysis, and Computer Skills:

  • Introduction to SPSS including Data Management and Analysis
  • Introduction to Epi-Data including Data Management and Analysis
  • Introduction to MS Windows and MS Office including Word, Excel and Power Point

Who Should Attend
Junior and mid-management level personal of public and private organisations and individuals.

Medium of Instruction
As English is the exclusive language of instruction, participants must be comfortable to read, write and speak in English language.

Educational Strategies
The four weeks course is comprised of interactive class room sessions, coupled with individual tutorial exercises, under the supervision of facilitators. Moreover take home exercises are given for practice on statistical methods to evaluate participants learning. The participants are required to attend all sessions and submit assignments of statistics and one written examination.

The class room sessions and tutorials are scheduled for Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Computer laboratory facility is available for practice on same days from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Duration of the Course
The duration of the course is 21 working days (four weeks). The scheduled dates are from July 12 to August 07, 2010, both days inclusive.

Tuition Fee
The tuition fee is Rs 22,400 (US$ 320 applicable for international participants) which covers classroom instructions, course material, and simple refreshment during working hours.
