Anjum Halai

 

Dr Anjum Halai is an Associate Professor and Head Research and Policy Studies at the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) in Karachi, Pakistan. She joined AKU-IED full time in June 1998. She has a wide experience of teaching at graduate and post graduate levels, including supervision of masters and doctoral students.

As head of Research and Policy Studies, she facilitates and encourages the execution and publication of high quality research programmes and projects at AKU-IED. For her contribution to the development of a research culture at AKU-IED and leading innovative research projects she was awarded the AKU Annual Merit Award, "Excellence in Scholarship of Discovery" for 2003-04. Dr Halai has published widely in national and international journal of repute. Currently she is leading studies which look at quality of schooling in Pakistan and at issues of social justice in science and mathematics classrooms.

As a founding chairperson of the Mathematics Association of Pakistan, she has played a major role in developing MAP as a dynamic professional association promoting mathematics education in Pakistan. Dr Halai is also an active member of the Campaign for Quality Education  www.cqe.net.pk, in Pakistan which undertakes research based advocacy on issues in education.

Qualification

  • Doctorate in Teacher Education (Mathematics) from Oxford University, UK
  • MEd (Teacher Education) Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development

Research Interests

  • Teacher education, with a focus on quality, social justice and curricular issues in mathematics teacher education
  • Research Methodology, in particular methodological and ethical issues in research in developing countries and action research as a paradigm of change and knowledge generation.
