Dr Dilshad Ashraf is an assistant professor and Head, Research and Policy Studies at the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) in Karachi , Pakistan . Dr Ashraf has a vast experience of working in educational institutions that ranges from teaching at grassroots to the work for the higher education. Her current affiliation with AKU-IED expands over past 12 years. As a member of pioneer team at the Professional Development Center North, Dr Ashraf conceptualized and conducted Whole School Improvement Programme in the schools run by government, AKES, P and community based organizations. Dr Ashraf did her doctoral studies from Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of University of Toronto with a specialization in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Development. Gender and education, school improvement, curriculum studies, and education and development are her specialized areas for teaching at the graduate level. Her scholarly work includes publications in national and international books and journals. She has also undertaken a significant number of research studies in the fields of gender in education, teacher development and quality education besides supervising students' numerous research projects. Institutional evaluation and academic audits of the educational institutions is Dr Ashraf's another important area of engagement. In her current role as the Head of Research and Policy Unit, Dr Ashraf is responsible to promote research and scholarship at AKU-IED.
Educational development has been a significant part of Dr Dilshad Ashraf's work over past few years. She worked closely with the field teams to conceptualize and implement earthquake reconstruction (education) project for some areas of AJK and NWFP which were hit by October 2005 earthquake. Dr Dilshad Ashraf's interest in gender issues with reference to education and institutional reform guides her current work. She is Co-Chair of working Group for Women (a university wide group) and is chair of its Research and Publication Committee. Dr Ashraf is also Gender Focal Person for AKU-IED's Strengthening Teacher Education Project. Ensuring the integration of gender perspective in project related policies and practices including its academic programmes, comes under her purview.
